Global
Fight for the Rights of Athletes |
Many national
and international agencies have integrated forces to fight
for the rights of athletes. One of the major problems facing
athletes is the ingestion of sports drinks and other sports
supplements, which contain non-labeled banned substances.
Currently, athletes
are ingesting illegal and banned substances unknowingly,
and facing the consequences. This is due to rogue companies
who knowingly allow the addition of dangerous and illegal
ingredients in sports supplements.
Nutraceuticals
and sports supplements marketed to the public have been
shown to contain banned substances. The FDA aggressively
pursues the distribution of illegal supplements, but the
plethora of dietary supplements available on the market
is overwhelming and thus difficult to identify.
Truth in labeling
has become a major issue for the FDA, as many sports supplements
do not contain what is stated on the product label.
|
The
World Anti-Doping Code was implemented in 2004,
which facilitated specific anti-doping rules and regulations
governing all sports and all countries.
Currently,
more than 600 sports organizations, including international
sports federations, national anti-doping organizations,
the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International
Paralympic Committee. Many other global professional leagues
in various countries have also adopted the Code.
The
Code was unanimously adopted by the World Anti-Doping
Agency (WADA) and endorsed by the 1,500 delegates present
on November 17, 2007, the final day of the Third World Conference
on Doping in Sport, in Madrid, Spain. The revisions to the
Code took effect on January 1, 2009.
In
support of this effort, the World Anti-Doping Agency
(WADA) publishes a comprehensive list of Prohibited
& Banned Substances, and is the premier authority
on the use of illegal substances used by athletes (www.wada-ama.org).

Statement
from USADA on Truth-In-Labeling
|
Travis
Tygart, the Chief Executive Officer of the United States
Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) stated their willingness
and desire to work with the supplement industry to enforce
truth-in-labeling.
Tygart
stated that ‘confidence killers’ such as steroid contamination
and truth-in-labeling issues meant that the USADA
is a long way from endorsing sports supplements for athletes
in the United States.
In
regards to truth-in-labeling, Tygart said that
the illegal use of banned substances in sports products
had, “…created an environment where athletes can’t simply
trust what they are getting through a dietary supplement
they may choose to contain what it says on the label…”
In
an effort to prevent and expose the use of illegal and banned
substances in sports supplements, Human Sports Performance®
has created various programs which address the important
issues in sports.
